What toys are on your list this year? Here's part one of my recommendations.

December 01, 2008

We're back with week two of Savvy Source's Christmas Gift Guide. Here's some of my top toy picks your your preschooler.

Mini Calin Nursery 8-inch Doll Set
by Corolle

My daughter picked up this doll (in purple, however) at our local children's museum. She'd been stalking it for awhile, and we finally relented. She's been clinging to it ever since. It's the perfect size doll for the preschool/toddler crowd; not too big, not too small (and a great size in case mom or dad needs to carry it!). The quality doll and the accessories make it a great value. My daughter has a half dozen or so dolls, and this one is by far her favorite.

Triple Hit Baseball
by Fisher Price

My son LOVES hitting the ball off the tee, so when I was looking for the "next-step" option for him, we found this. I only wish I hadn't wasted my money the first time around with a boring basic tee! This will grow with your child, and will provide hours and hours or entertainment. And, yes, plain old wiffle balls work, too. PS. You'll have just as much fun "playing" as they do.

The Original Coloforms
by University Games

There's a story in my family's lore, that revolves around bribing me with Colorforms to get me through a week of kindergarten without tears. And let me tell you, these toys are so cool, they did the trick. I saw these and decided I had to get them for my kids to enjoy just as much as I did (and they have). However, their behavior has not improved much. I guess I forgot to ask for something in return! Colorforms are great when you need a few minutes of the kids sitting still while you load the car, start dinner or take a shower. And, I love the fact these are a no-mess toy. Even young (preschooler-aged) kids can clean these up when they are done playing.

Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet
by Leap Frog

We have a slightly older version of this toy, but the concept is exactly the same. Leap Frog does a great job creating electronic toys that actually TEACH without obnoxious electronic noises. I really didn't realize how important the concept of "letter sounds" were until a friend told me that this is a needed kindergarten skill. We received it as a gift when my oldest was just a year old (and have given several more as gifts since that time), and more than four years later it's still on our refrigerator, getting used almost everyday. And I'm happy to report that it helped my now-kindergartner learn his "letter sounds" helping him get ahead in preparation for school.

Oball Rattle
by Rhino Toys

We have the version of this that does not include the built-in rattle. What I love about this toy is its simplicity - nothing fancy, but there are tons of ways to play with it; and it will grow with your child as well.
