Autumn
What I'm thankful for.
November 27, 2008
Even with the hustle and bustle of the holidays Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful time to remember all the things in our lives to be thankful for. I'm thankful for the Seattle rain that nourishes our plants, rivers and lakes. I'm thankful for living in a place so accessible to both ocean and mountains. I'm thankful for beautiful northwest sunsets. I'm thankful for communities Read more...
Because I don't want to go shopping: Thanksgiving crafts.
November 26, 2008
Are you the type of person who heads out bright and early on black Friday to get the best deals? I, unfortunately, am not. No sale or, no matter how great, can motivate me to sit in traffic, crowd in the stores and wait in line. Nope; not going to do it. I don't even like to head OUT on the day after Thanksgiving to any place other than our neighborhood park or to Read more...
History Lesson: Veterans Day.
November 10, 2008
Your preschooler will likely have tomorrow, Veterans Day, off from the rigors of the academics and everyday stressors of school. Make Tuesday more than just a day off. It's a great opportunity to talk about the significance and history of the day. So just what is the history of Veterans Day (which, by the way, is the official spelling as declared by the Read more...
De-stressing Halloween.
October 31, 2008
Thursday my daughter's preschool class celebrated Halloween. We've been through these sort of celebrations before; as fun as they are for the kids (they ARE really fun), they are also very overwhelming. Case in point. They held the party in the morning and it included fun games, a pumpkin craft and then they enjoyed a pizza lunch (which is a real treat for them) and a cupcake for dessert. Read more...
November is here!
October 30, 2008
Halloween is LITERALLY (and finally!) just around the corner. And since it lands on a Friday this year, you have a TON of events available to celebrate on Friday evening . I'm guess that it is due to the holiday and the last weekend of the month that this weekend is slow on events. Like S-L-O-W. You've been warned. Local kids' music favorite, Recess Monkey Read more...
Yummy Halloween treats ideas.
October 29, 2008
I, apparently, CANNOT STOP WRITING ABOUT HALLOWEEN. I am scared to see what Seattle Savvy will be like in December for Christmas, Hanukkah,Kwanza, New Years and just general holiday-ness . You can just picture it now: me sitting in my office dresses in a lovely Christmas/Santa Sweater, plugging away on my Savvy posts. Ah, Christmas. But, honestly, I really am not that into Halloween. Where to celebrate Halloween in Seattle (preschooler approved).
October 24, 2008
I never imagined there would be SO many family events for young children in Seattle during the Halloween season (it's not just a day, apparently). In Savvy Seattle, we have covered the perfect pumpkin gathering places , Halloween events and festivals (those not occurring on October 31), and even a gaggle of fall craft ideas . And we're not done yet. While trick-or-tricking through Read more...
What to do this weekend that has NOTHING to do with Halloween.
October 23, 2008
SHHHH! Today we are NOT TALKING ABOUT HALLOWEEN. This weekend guide consists of no Halloween related events and activities. Okay, I LIED, there is ONE Halloween related activity. But it should be super fun so I made an exception. This weekend in home to this month's edition of the ever popular Baby Loves Disco . You can pre-order tickets or purchase at the door, but whatever you do: put your Read more...
The top fun family Halloween events.
October 21, 2008
Each Tuesday is list day at the Savvy Source, and today is no exception. Each Savvy city blog examines the same theme each Tueday: the top five ways to localize Father's Day or the top five places to see fish locally , for example. And this week all Savvy city blogs are covering the top Halloween events around town and for the VERY FIRST TIME EVER I am making an exception and including SIX Read more...
Pumpkins!
October 17, 2008
I love pumpkins. I LOVE PUMPKINS. I love pumpkins so much that I had them be a major part of my floral centerpieces when I got married (trust me, it was SPECTACULAR). And, as Halloween is approaching (quickly!), it is pumpkin season in the Puget Sound. And while we've already taken a closer look at the great farms to visit this harvest season , here we'll look specifically at the pumpkin Read more...
This weekend guide practically wrote itself.
October 16, 2008
I was under the delusional belief that as the summer moved into fall and the weather cooled and the rain returned; my Thursday "weekend round-up" posts would become increasingly difficult to write. This has not turned out to be the case. AT ALL. Each week I discover more and more interesting events, festivals and workshops. And the roster of events for the upcoming weekend just further Read more...
Fall crafts to keep your preschooler busy.
October 15, 2008
I had a friend in college whose mother would decorate their home for each season, and by DECORATE, I mean that the take down/set up for each season would take the better part of three days and that decorations would cover every surface in their home. EVERY. LAST. SURFACE. I distinctly remember my friend describing to me in detail the difference in the decorations between fall, Halloween Read more...
Seattle's farm fest harvest guide.
October 10, 2008
Fall in Seattle (for those of you not totally depressed by the passing of summer) is a beautiful season, full of glorious fall colors, tastes and smells. And experiencing the farms of the Puget Sound Region is a perfect way to also see the animals and foods alike go along with it. These farms are one of the reasons life is great for Seattle families. You can live in the city with all its Read more...
Perfect activities for a sunny Seattle fall weekend.
October 09, 2008
Now I realize this weekend you'll be busy with fun Halloween crafts , but there are tons of fun family activities taking place all over the greater Puget Sound this weekend. It is the season of the farm harvest, and I'll do a review of all the location farms on Friday, but what else is scheduled for this upcoming beautiful, sunny fall weekend? The Kelsey Read more...
Make at home crafts: Halloween edition.
October 08, 2008
One of the joys for me as a parent is that we can experience the holidays, no matter how small, with our children. Further, we can use holidays and other events as learning jump off points for more fun at home (oh, and it helps burn daylight, as well). It's a great way to provide ideas and themes for crafts, treats, and meals to assist you in planning your days at home. Also: FUN Read more...
The first REAL autumn weekend in Seattle.
September 25, 2008
The official start of fall, the autumn equinox, took place a few days ago on September 20. Now that the rain has arrived, there is no denying that the season has changed and we now must say goodbye to summer. But, we don't have to say goodbye to fun family weekend activities (THANK GOODNESS). And the really good news is that the weather should be looking up just in time for the weekend. Read more...
Warm up with chicken noodle soup.
September 06, 2008
This delicious soup is perfect for lunch or dinner on a cold Seattle day. My son brought this recipe home a week ago from school in his Scholastic Parent & Child magazine. It caught my eye, because my kids love their canned chicken noodle soup and I would LOVE to be able to produce a home made replacement. I loved the idea of using a roasted chicken; which is something I could do at Read more...
Things you must do with your children in Seattle before they grow up, Vol. 2.
June 12, 2008
I started this list a few weeks ago - a list of the 100 must-do activities for you and your children to do before they grow up and are "too cool" to hang out with mom and dad. (Am I the only one that fears this?) We covered the Fremont Troll, a visit to Pike Place Market, sledding at Snoqualmie , eating a Top Pot donut right off the conveyor belt, and riding the Tacoma Link light rail. Read more...
