Welcome to March!
February 26, 2009
I can't believe it snowed again, can you? My kids don't even blink and eye seeing snow on the ground, it's just like it happens all the time now.
No worries, though, the snow should be gone by the weekend and none is expected next week. Whew.
Now what to do....
Town Hall Seattle brings you their Saturday Family Concert Series - this weekend featuring Thomas Arthur, Lyrical Juggler. Just what is "lyrical juggling??" Thomas Arthur integrates juggling, music and storytelling into one fantastic show sure to entrance adults and children alike. Shows are at 11am and 1pm; tickets are required, but children under 12 are free.
Salsa comes to the Covington Public Library when The Supersones present The Roots of Cuban Music on Saturday from 3-4pm. Come prepared to learn about its history and, of course, DANCE.
Looking for just music, hold the juggling? Then head to the Mount Baker Neighborhood Community Club - Eric Ode will be performing on Saturday at 10:30am. He's a singer/songwriter who is perfect for your preschooler.
For four days, Pacific Science Center will be hosting Polar Science Weekend, through March 1. You'll be able to step in a REAL research hut and participate in polar bear crafts. Plenty to entertain the youngest and oldest in your household.
And Monday is Dr. Suess' Birthday! Celebrate at home with some green eggs and ham and then head out to one of the many libraries that are offering their own celebrations. Check with your local library system for options.

You Zoo, I Zoo, We ALL Zoo!
February 18, 2009
Visiting the zoo should be one of the joys of every childhood. The exploration of the grounds, the animals, and the adventure - it's all there for a day (or afternoon of fun). Here's your checklist for the zoos of the Pacific Northwest.
Have you visited Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo? Consider purchasing a membership, because there really is too much to see and do in just one day. We enjoy being able to head there for just a few hours, rather than stuffing it all into one long day (hello, tantrum alert!). My kids' favorites include the carousel, Zoomazium, and the elephants. And Woodland Park Zoo is much more - they are fantastic special programs, so look for those as well.
Get two-for-one with a trip to Tacoma's Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. This park is home to a maritime discovery center, an Asian forest sanctuary and a terrific hands on kids' zone.
Headed south? You may want to stop-by my hometown zoo in Portland, the Oregon Zoo. It is co-located (well, across the parking lot) with the Portland Children's Museum, so there's a whole DAY planned right there!
For those you like an international fare, you can always head north to visit the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Vancouver, BC. Located just 10 minutes north of the Aldergrove/Lynden Border Crossing, it's a great option for a quick day trip (about 2 hours away).
And don't forget, if you are a member a zoo, you may receive reciprocal membership privileges at these and other zoos across the country. Check out more information on this program at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' website.

While the parents are away, the children will play!
October 01, 2008
My husband and I are not fortunate enough to have relatives living in close proximity who are available to watch our children (a 3 year old and a 5 year old) on a regular basis. My children do, however, have a beloved aunt who lives about four hours away and will happily watch her niece and nephew during her semi-regular weekend visits so that we can get a "parent's night out". How to get the most out of your ventures out around town.
July 28, 2008
Here at Seattle Savvy Source, we have this habit of sending you all over town and the greater Puget Sound region: to museums, festivals, events and your very own back yard. And, for the most part, you can just pack up your preschooler and be on your way. But could some of these activities be enhanced by a little pre-planning? With a little extra work on your part, you can make your next Read more...
History Lesson: Point Defiance Park.
July 23, 2008
You've heard me go on and on and on about how cool Point Defiance Park in Tacoma is. It's one of the nation's largest urban parks (top 80) and has a rich history. President Andrew Johnson reserved the land at what is now Point Defiance Park for use as a military installation - although that function never materialized. Instead, it sat undeveloped until President Grover Cleveland deeded the Read more...
Three Days In and Around Seattle: Day 3, the Southern Tour.
July 10, 2008
We're now at the third and final day of our "Three Days In and Around Seattle" series. We explored the best of urban Seattle on Tuesday, and yesterday we ventured west to the beaches and beauty of the Kitsap Peninsula . But for the third day on our tour, I'm going to let my personal opinions influence my recommendation (wait, isn't that what I'm here for?). As you may have read in my Savvy Read more...

Three Days In and Around Seattle: Day 1, Urban Seattle.
July 08, 2008
We're all about great escapes this July at The Savvy Source, and this week we'll be covering the closest of our great escapes - three days in and around Seattle. Lucky for us, the Puget Sound has so much to offer families with preschoolers. Odds are you'll be entertaining visitors some time (or multiple times!) this summer. I'll be offering three days of guides to satisfy the most Read more...
Summer day trips to fill your staycation.
June 20, 2008
Since summer has (sort of) come to the Seattle area, my children have both been pestering me with the questions of how soon until our vacation. You see, we have our own version of a staycation and it includes my siblings and their kids, a log cabin and Lake Whatcom. It's hard to explain to them exactly what "6 weeks away" feels like, so when we get a bit closer, we'll make a countdown Read more...
Day tripping near Seattle.
May 13, 2008
Sometimes you've just got to get out of dodge. You ask the kids where the want to go this weekend, and you hear g rumbles when you mention the usual suspects like the Imagine Children's Museum or Woodland Park Zoo. The kids are restless and the weather is great, so it's a perfect time to pack up the car and venture outside of the metropolitan area. Here are some great recommendations for Read more...
