The Weekend Ahead.
August 20, 2009
The kids and I are headed out this weekend on our final summer HURRAH before preparing for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, this requires a six hour car ride, but we get to spend a fantastic time with family doing funactivities like hiking and spending time at a water park. Plus, the weather should be PERFECT.
The weather should hold up pretty well 'round these parts, too. And there's still plenty of outdoor (and indoor!) fun to be had this weekend.
Get out on Friday evening to enjoy Concerts at the Mural at Seattle Center. It begins at 6pm, and this week features Fruit Bats, The Moondoggies, and Johnny and the Moon.
The Seattle Center is also hosting Tibet Fest this weekend. There will be a ton to see and do (and maybe learn a bit, too). The colorful costumes and dramatic dance is just the beginning.
It's Seattle's Central Area's turn to hold their Seafair sanctioned event - the Central Area Community Festival. Held Saturday from 11am to 9pm; it promises "food, fun and music". I'm sure they'll deliver.
Need a moment of downtime? Then perhaps the storytime at Mockingbird Books is just for you and your toddler. They'll be reading morning at 11am, except Sundays.
One of my favorite children's performers, Nancy Stewart, will be working her musical magic at the Greenwood Public Library this Sunday at 1pm.

Looking Ahead, Weekend Style.
August 13, 2009
The cooler weather this week has been a welcome change for my family. I had to go digging into my kids' closets to find pants for them to wear; only to realize that they were almost too short. I see some school clothes shopping in my future.
But until then, we have a few more weeks and weekends of summer to enjoy. Here are some options for you, too.
Start the weekend off right, by listening to Music in the Park at Bothell Landing. The concert starts at at 7:00 pm and this week features Alex Duncan Reggae Band.
Run to Mercer Island for Island Jam. It includes a Summer Carnival that will include face painting, slides, bouncers, games and more! Friday, from noon to 4:00 pm.
Hungry? Head to Edmonds for their 37the Annual Taste of Edmonds. It will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday in downtown Edmonds. Enjoy music, kids' activities, and, of course, plenty of food!
On Sunday, bring your picnic basket and blanket to enjoy Edmonds' Concert in the Park featuring Portage Bay Big Band. Located at Edmonds City Park (3rd and Pine), the concert starts at 3:00 pm.
Enjoy these last summer weekends; only a few left!

There's Only So Many Weekends Left.
August 06, 2009
On the last day of school, my kindergartner was sent home with more paperwork and materials that I had EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.
Okay, that may have been a bit dramatic.
But still! Somehow, the most important piece of paper of the lot (the 1st grade supply list) I had somehow misplaced. Thank goodness I ran into a mom of my son's classmate in the supermarket last week and she mercifully emailed me a scanned copy.
Why is this so important now?
Because the school year will be here before you know it. So now is the time to enjoy every last drop of summer. Every morsel of fun. Every festival and event there is.
And this is a great weekend to experience just that.
Enjoy Music in the Park at Bothell Landing this Friday evening. This week features an 80s tribute band! Sweet!
The Rainer Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Rainer Valley Heritage Festival and Parade. The parade starts at 11:00am and everybody loves a parade!
It's fair season! Celebrate at the Pierce County Fair in Graham. I don't even need to describe all the preschooler-friendly activities available - IT'S A FAIR. You get the general idea.
All weekend (Fri-Sun), enjoy Auburn Good 'Ol Days - where you can "celebrate like the did in the good 'ol days!" Translation: BBQ, entertainment, and kid's fun. Sounds good to me.
There's another opportunity to catch Recess Monkey at the Bellevue Library of the King County Library System. They'll be there Saturday at 11:00 am.

Weekend Plans for When You're Not in Water or Melting.
July 30, 2009
All I have to say about this week is:
AGH.
MEH.
GRR.
It is just TOO hot. So hot, in fact, that my preschooler suffered from heat exhaustion this past Monday. It was pretty scary for a few moments, but now we know more about how to keep us all cool. Which basically revolves around drinking LOTS of water and limiting sun exposure.
While the weekend should bring us slightly lower temps - but still in the high 80s and low 90s - you'll still need something to do to fill in the times between dips in your kiddie pool. So pack plenty water and have fun!
What's summer without fresh blueberries? Come celebrate the local harvest as Bryant Blueberry Farm and Nursery hosts their Blueberry Festival on Saturday. They'll have pony rides, BBQ goodies, and, of course, plenty of blueberries to pick and enjoy.
It's Pioneer Days in Lake City! The fun will include a street fair, family activities and a parade! Rumor has it - there may also be a visit from the Seafair Pirates. Start August off right with a visit to this festival on Saturday.
You have a couple of opportunities to see Recess Monkey this weekend as they play two show around town. They'll be at Alphabet Soup Books in Wallingford on at 11am and at 3rd Place Books at 3pm on Saturday. The three members of the band used to be classroom teachers - so they know how to handle a crowd of kids with music and fun.
And remember, whatever you do, HYDRATE.

Weekend Plan Overload.
July 17, 2009
It's going to be hard to figure out just how to cram everything into this weekend.
So. Many. Option. For. Fun.
What will you choose?
Those foodies among us will be at the Bite of Seattle. With free admission and the new Just a Bite! promotion (right portions at the right price) you just can't go wrong. This is a very popular event - so come early and bring your patience. And your appetite.
Want to learn all about energy conservation? Then the 6th annual Shoreline SolarFest is for you. There will be tons of exhibitors (including energy providers and local environmentally friendly businesses) and a special spot for kids to play. I took my two kids last year and we had a great time!
A great event for the cultured family is the Wedgewood Art Festival. The perfect opportunity for strolling and admiring local artists.
Saturday is also Family Day at the Experience Music Project - meaning, FREE admission!
Enjoy!

What You Sould Be Doing This Weekend.
July 10, 2009
I'm just going to say it; even though your probably don't want to hear it.
I actually enjoyed the cloudy and cooler weather this week.
(I KNOW! SACRILEGE.)
It was just nice for a few days to not have to water the plants twice a day, be able to wear a sweater to work, and not have the kids have trouble falling asleep because of the heat.
But the sun is back! And since summer is in full swing, you'll have plenty to occupy your family with this weekend.
Seafair kicks off tomorrow! It's the 60th Anniversary of the classic Seattle summer festival. The Seafair Pirates will greet you to open the festival this Saturday at 11:30 am at Alki Beach. Be sure to check out the Seafair website to see all the fun activities they have in store over the next few weeks.
Mercer Island is hosting it's annual Summer Celebration at Luther Burbank Park and Mercerdale Park. My guess? You'll be spending most of your time at the Children's Fun Zone. But no worries - there's food and entertainment as well.
Those in or near West Seattle have easy access to the West Seattle Summerfest. There will be live entertainment, vendors, food, and more.
Over on the Eastside, head to Redmond's Derby Days, featuring a bicycle race, live music, kids' parade, and carnival.
Now, if I can just decide how many events I can fit in this weekend...

July Fourth, Seattle Style.
July 02, 2009
For the third year in a row it's predicted we'll have a sunny and warm Fourth of July (which is sort of unprecedented for Seattle, really). So put on plenty of sunscreen, bring your ice cold water and have fun!
Enjoy Seattle at the Chase Family Fourth (pending the outcome of the lawsuit, of course). Enjoy family activities and entertainment at Gas Works Park . Be sure to come prepared with your blanket and snacks, then spend the day enjoying games, facepainting, kite flying and other fun family activities. Be sure to look for Sound Wave - the Seattle Sounders official marching band.
Or head to the eastside to check out Bellevue's Family Fourth. Family activities start at 2pm and include balloon artists, magicians, jugglers, and MORE facepainting.
Enjoy your holiday through baking. My family will be enjoying a neighborhood block party and will be bringing this flag themed treat. If I'm able to keep it away from hungry kid tummies until the afternoon, that is.
Watch a parade - near you. Everywhere you turn will be a parade. From Edmonds to Bothell, and Issaquah to Enumclaw; there is bound to be one near you. Most parades are a part of a larger festival, so plan your trip with time to enjoy the entire experience. Get your best red, white and blue outfit on, grab a flag and enjoy the show.

Welcome to Summer!
June 18, 2009
We've moved on from what may have been the most gorgeous spring EVER in Seattle (at least in my 15 years of living here!) into summer 2009. Which means for most weekends through September, you'll have your choice of festivals and events to enjoy.
So embrace summer this weekend by choosing from the following events:
This Saturday, the Fun at the Locks Concert Series brings you children's dance and music groups from the Nordic Heritage Museum to perform at Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard. There's even an opportunity for your children to participate!
Come find your artistic side at the Edmonds Arts Festival. For children, they host a "Children's Creative Corner", featuring balloon artists, children's musicians and hands on arts activities.
It's strawberry festival time! In the south end, you have the Burien Strawberry and Arts Festival, and up north, it's the Marysville Strawberry Festival. Both events will have plenty of music, activities and family fun, and of course, strawberries!
And, remember, the Fremont Fair IS a family event! You can enjoy concerts, an arts show, food, performers, and activities. (You may, however, want to skip the Solstice Parade, which is family for its naked bikers. Not that there's anything wrong with that).
PS. And don't forget - this Sunday is Father's Day!

Five Ways to Get the Travel Bug.
June 02, 2009
The end of school often means the beginning of the travel season. The current state of our economy may mean that many of us will be enjoying another year of "staycations". You and your preschooler can still get the travel bug, while hitting up these local travel inspirations - whether it be by air, land or sea!
The first segment of the Seattle Link Light Rail project is scheduled to open in July. Pack your backpacks, pay your fair, and get on the rail at the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel. You can head south to venture to another travel-themed destination...
...The Sea-Tac Airport! You can watch planes take off and land and talk about all the places you want to go and have been.
No talk of airplanes would be complete without a visit to the Museum of Flight. You can check out planes up close, sit in cockpits and enjoy the Kid's Flight Zone. (PSSST. Wells Fargo Bank hosts Free First Thurdays every month from 5pm to 9pm.)
Water travel more appealing? Did you know that the Washington State Ferries System has the distinction of being home to the largest fleet of passenger and vehicles ferries in the United States and the third largest in the world? You can plan just an afternoon trip toBainbridge Island or a whole day to Canada.
You can always enjoy a Seattle park tradition - have lunch at Freeway Park! Listen to the cars and trucks below and splash in the fountain's water. Perfect for a summer day!

Holiday Weekend Ahead!
May 21, 2009
Memorial Day weekend is the often referred to as the unofficial start of summer - even though summer doesn't really start until June 21. It's a great time to getaway - whether that's visiting family, camping or another destination.
On the small chance that you'll be around this weekend (enjoying the beautiful weather!) here are some great activities to keep you busy.
Seattle is hosting the Northwest Folklife Festival; one of the nation's largest community arts festivals. Held at Seattle Center, there are lots of family activities available in the Folklife Commons, as well as specially programmed children's activities available on the Fisher Green Stage. The festival rund Friday through Sunday.
It might be time to take the family to Safeco Field to catch a Mariner's game. They're playing at home all weekend!
Those in the South Sound may choose to check out the 3rd annual Olympic Arts Festival which celebrates nature and wildlife fine art.
For the Monday holiday - it's good to know that not all local children's museums are closed on Monday (the Imagine Children's Museum in Everett is closed, for example). However, the Woodland Park Zoo is open and ready for you to view the new penguin exhibit. Be sure to call ahead before traveling to local destinations.

Remembering Seattle.
May 18, 2009
Sometimes I find it hard to believe I have lived in Seattle for almost 15 years. In a few short years, the time I lived in Portland (born and raised!) will equal (and then be less than) the time I've spent here in Seattle. It seems so amazing, especially since I have such vivid memories of growing up there. We spent many days visit OMSI, seeing the animals at the Oregon Zoo, Little League games at Wilshire Park, and ice cream at Burgerville .
These are the type of memories I hope to instill in my children growing up in Seattle. And these are the spots I hope they remember.
Exploring Woodland Park Zoo. I love that we are members so each visit we can focus on a few exhibits and activities; we don't feel compelled to cram the whole zoo into one day. Because it's not actually possible.
Beach combing at one of our many beaches. Growing up near beaches - both saltwater and fresh - I often forget that not everyone has such immediate access to all the fun and adventure a beach has to offer.
Camping our summers away. It's true - I was never, EVER!, a camper until my kids entered the picture. Now, I don't claim to be an expert, but if even I can get out and commune with nature, you can, too. Our great state of Washington has so many options, from close-in spots with many amenities - to far off, truly rouging it spots, there is surely a location that will fit your family's needs.
What do you want your children to remember about growing up in Seattle?

May Day: Seattle Style.
April 30, 2009
May Day is tomorrow, May 1st; and it's a great opportunity to share some fun, spring crafts with your preschooler.
While May Day is celebrated for many traditions and in many ways across the world; in the United States it is generally celebrated with the creation of May Baskets. The baskets are usually filled with flowers and then left at a friend or neighbor's door. The giver will then ring the door bell or knock and run away. If the receiver of the May Day Basket is quick enough and can catch the giver; a kiss is exchanged.
To me the day puts two of my favorite things together: flowers and crafts! Here's how you can have fun, too.
Make a May Day Maypole. Another fun May Day activity is the tradition of a Maypole. For this smaller version, you'll just need some ribbon or streamers, a paper towel roll and stickers.
No May Day would be complete without a May Day Basket. They are easy enough to make, you'll have enough time to make one to give away and one to keep. Another option for your May Day Basket are these made out of paper plates. So hard to choose, we may make both.
In France, wishing wells feature prominently in the celebration of May Day. Make one of your own and get your wishes (and coins!) ready.
Not up for a full-blown craft project? Then how about coloring some May Day themed coloring pages? Print these out and you're ready to go.
Enjoy May Day!

Come On, Let the Sunshine In.
April 17, 2009
So many things to do this weekend in Seattle; so little time! My family is BOOKED UP this weekend: dance class, Little League, a family barbecue and two (count 'em TWO) children's birthday parties.
WHEW.
Hopefully your schedule has a little more wiggle room in it, so your family can enjoy all the awesome opportunities available this weekend.
(HINT. The sun in the forecast won't hurt either.
Hit up the Seattle Center to enjoy the Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival, from April 17-19. The event commemorates Japan’s gift of 1,000 blossoming cherry trees to Seattle in 1976 and features tea demonstrations, Japanese food and much more.
Do you "Do The Puyallup" every fall? Did you know they have a spring fair, too? Head south to gobble up some elephant ears and see some animals at the Puyallup Spring Fair.
On Saturday, YMCA's in the greater Seattle area are hosting a Healthy Kids Day. The event will provide information nutrition and education, as well as fun activities, including games and art.
Join the Earth Day celebration at the Climate Day for Kids at the Olympic Sculpture Park on Saturday. They'll learn about climate change and how their families can help reduce their carbon footprint. And since it's the art museum, there will also be opportunities to create art using recycled materials.
So, go on, get out there this weekend!

No April Fools Here!
April 02, 2009
It's sort of tradition to have cruddy weather during Spring Break in Seattle; and this week has been no exception. My son and I traveled to Idaho to visit family and were greeted by five fresh inches of snow once we arrived. On Wednesday, we ventured back over the snowy Cascade Mountains and were greeted by snow falling in the greater Seattle area.
Ah, April Fool's Day. But, no, REALLY, it happened.
Welcome to Spring in Seattle.
The weather may not be cooperating, but there is still plenty to do now that Spring has sprung (at least on the calendar).
Have a love of alpacas? Head over to the Puyallup Fair Grounds for ALPACAPALOOZA! This free event will feature live alpacas in competitions, demonstrations and more. All day Saturday and Sunday.
It's April - which means it's time for the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Other than all the gorgeous tulips to view, there are a lot of family friendly events and activities to enjoy.
Have a Tuesday music break at the Mercer Island Public Library for Songfest! Your preschooler can dance and sing away their morning energy with performer Patrick Doherty.
And, don't forget, Whirligig at Seattle Center runs through April 12!

What Will You Be Doing This Weekend and Upcoming Week?
March 19, 2009
Starting when I was five, I played years and year and years AND YEARS of Little League. Well, thirteen years to be exact. I considered the experiences I had as some as my favorites from my youth. I waited years and years AND YEARS to have kids of my very own who could play Little League, too, and have just as much fun as I had.
That year has finally come.
My son is now in tee-ball and this weekend is the annual pancake breakfast and JAMBOREE. So, I know what WE will be doing this weekend - but what will you be up to?
It's Baby Loves Disco weekend! On Saturday head down to Heaven in Pioneer Square and boogie on down!
Do you have a rock lover in your house (and not the musical kind)? Then they may enjoy the Rock and Gem Show at the Lake City Community Center held this Saturday and Sunday. It's free!
And next week brings lots of fun activities as well.
This Monday is Ivar's Flounders Day, where you can enjoy a choice of entrees for $1.04 (with the purchase of any regular prices entree)! My kids love the clam strips. Lunch? CHECK.
On Tuesday you can enjoy Nancy Stewart at the Burien Public Library as she performs her Mother Goose on the Loose show. Be prepared to sing along!
Have a great week!

Experiencing Spring in Seattle.
March 17, 2009
The snow this weekend was pretty darn incredible. My family and I live in the "Puget Sound convergence zone" so our weather is sort of its own micro-climate - often experiencing what I consider strange weather events. And this Sunday was no different - somehow, snowflakes combined as they were falling from the sky to create these sort of massive "super" snowflakes. There were some snowflakes that were - NO JOKE - the size of small salad plates.
But we soldier on into spring. By my calender, the first day of spring is only 4 days away (March 21). Here's some great ways to enjoy spring in Seattle! (But don't forget your umbrella!)
Spring in Seattle is a great time to get geared up for summer by learning to swim - our very own Angie helps us decide if our preschooler would benefit from private swim lessons.
While Washington, DC has their famous Cherry Blossom Festival, we have our own for you to enjoy: the Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival which is held in April. Other than the festival, great spots to enjoy the cherry blossoms include in the Quad on the University of Washington Campus or along the walkway on Lake Washington Boulevard. Breathtaking.
Get ready for baseball reason (and the return of Junior!!) by scheduling a Safeco Field Tour.
Plan a trip up to Skagit Valley to the annual Tulip Festival. The acres and acres AND ACRES of the tulips are a sight to see; but there are lots of family activities to enjoy, too.
Pack a picnic and enjoy your local park. It may have been MONTHS since you've made this trip - but the days should dry out soon, so make your first trip back special by packing your lunch and inviting some friends to join you.

The Sun is Out, but the Snow May Be On Its Way.
March 05, 2009
Snow or no snow...spring is just around the corner - I can FEEL it. Here's some great ways to get through another week while waiting for spring to arrive.
This Friday is Free First Friday Concert night at Music Works Northwest (the non-profit community music school). This month will feature Linda Bailey and Klaus Liebetanz performing family-friendly flute duets. Admission is free.
Want something to do together as a family? The Bellevue Family YMCA is hosting a Family Fun Night on Friday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm - open to the public ($5 for non members). You and your children can enjoy craft projects, gymactivities and swimming.
Go celebrate Dr. Suess' 105th Birthday on Saturday at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park from pm 9:00 - 11:00 am. There will be entertainment, crafts, stories, and, OF COURSE, green eggs and ham!
The City of Kent is hosting Kent Kids' Arts Day on Saturday at the Kent Commons. Artists will guide your little Picasso through a variety of hands-on art experiences. You can also take a brake from all the art and listen to live entertainment all day.
Not ready to give winter up yet? Hold on by enjoying Preschool Skate (Monday through Friday, 11:00am - 3:00 pm) at Castle Ice Arena - free is a great price!

Top Five Seattle Spots (According to My Preschooler).
March 02, 2009
My preschooler is almost four - well, four going on fifteen. She likes what she likes; and isn't afraid to share her preferences with you.
LOUDLY.
She's the type of kid who will plop down to another young child during library story time and say, "Hi! I'm Sis. I'm four! This is my mom, Buffany." (She has trouble saying my name. Super cute now; possible speech issues later.)
Here's her five favorite stops around town - and if you ever meet her, I'm sure she'll tell you all about them.
Her favorite sunny (or just not rainy) park is Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline. The view is spectacular from several locations, it's got a great kids play area, and you can spend the WHOLE day down at the beach. We love to fly kites there, too.
Heading north to Everett's Imagine Children's Museum has saved us on quite a few rainy days. The traffic into Everett is usually good, parking in plenty, and the exhibits are fun. REALLY fun.
There is something special about Green Lake Park - but my daughter can't quite verbalize why. "I like the water" or "BIG PARK" is all she'll say since she's too busy playing and running around.
I can't even THINK about The Woodland Park Zoo near my daughter. She some how senses it, and then that is all she will talk about until we go.
A girl's gotta eat right? And The Old Spaghetti Factory is tops on her list. Luckily for her, it's tops on ours too - for the family friendly atmosphere and mizithra cheese. OMG the cheese.
What are YOUR favorite Seattle spots?

Welcome to March!
February 26, 2009
I can't believe it snowed again, can you? My kids don't even blink and eye seeing snow on the ground, it's just like it happens all the time now.
No worries, though, the snow should be gone by the weekend and none is expected next week. Whew.
Now what to do....
Town Hall Seattle brings you their Saturday Family Concert Series - this weekend featuring Thomas Arthur, Lyrical Juggler. Just what is "lyrical juggling??" Thomas Arthur integrates juggling, music and storytelling into one fantastic show sure to entrance adults and children alike. Shows are at 11am and 1pm; tickets are required, but children under 12 are free.
Salsa comes to the Covington Public Library when The Supersones present The Roots of Cuban Music on Saturday from 3-4pm. Come prepared to learn about its history and, of course, DANCE.
Looking for just music, hold the juggling? Then head to the Mount Baker Neighborhood Community Club - Eric Ode will be performing on Saturday at 10:30am. He's a singer/songwriter who is perfect for your preschooler.
For four days, Pacific Science Center will be hosting Polar Science Weekend, through March 1. You'll be able to step in a REAL research hut and participate in polar bear crafts. Plenty to entertain the youngest and oldest in your household.
And Monday is Dr. Suess' Birthday! Celebrate at home with some green eggs and ham and then head out to one of the many libraries that are offering their own celebrations. Check with your local library system for options.

The top fun family Halloween events.
October 21, 2008
Each Tuesday is list day at the Savvy Source, and today is no exception. Each Savvy city blog examines the same theme each Tueday: the top five ways to localize Father's Day or the top five places to see fish locally , for example. And this week all Savvy city blogs are covering the top Halloween events around town and for the VERY FIRST TIME EVER I am making an exception and including SIX Read more...
Pumpkins!
October 17, 2008
I love pumpkins. I LOVE PUMPKINS. I love pumpkins so much that I had them be a major part of my floral centerpieces when I got married (trust me, it was SPECTACULAR). And, as Halloween is approaching (quickly!), it is pumpkin season in the Puget Sound. And while we've already taken a closer look at the great farms to visit this harvest season , here we'll look specifically at the pumpkin Read more...
This weekend guide practically wrote itself.
October 16, 2008
I was under the delusional belief that as the summer moved into fall and the weather cooled and the rain returned; my Thursday "weekend round-up" posts would become increasingly difficult to write. This has not turned out to be the case. AT ALL. Each week I discover more and more interesting events, festivals and workshops. And the roster of events for the upcoming weekend just further Read more...
History Lesson: Deception Pass.
October 13, 2008
While not a Seattle landmark, per se, Deception Pass is located north in Island County, and should be on your short list for a day-visit. Technically, Deception Pass is a strait (narrow, navigable channel of water that connects two larger navigable bodies of water) that connects Skagit Bay, which is part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. While breathtaking in Read more...

While the parents are away, the children will play!
October 01, 2008
My husband and I are not fortunate enough to have relatives living in close proximity who are available to watch our children (a 3 year old and a 5 year old) on a regular basis. My children do, however, have a beloved aunt who lives about four hours away and will happily watch her niece and nephew during her semi-regular weekend visits so that we can get a "parent's night out". Less Read more...
The first REAL autumn weekend in Seattle.
September 25, 2008
The official start of fall, the autumn equinox, took place a few days ago on September 20. Now that the rain has arrived, there is no denying that the season has changed and we now must say goodbye to summer. But, we don't have to say goodbye to fun family weekend activities (THANK GOODNESS). And the really good news is that the weather should be looking up just in time for the weekend. Read more...
It takes two: top five activities for your preschooler and a friend.

Here's the top five activities for your preschooler and their buddy in Seattle. (Yes, my kids and I will say, "yes" to your invite.) 1. Visit a museum together. Read more...

The weekend is coming, whether you like it or not.
September 18, 2008
The outstanding warm September weather continues; though they tell us rain should appear by the time Monday dawns. Take part of the weekend (I know it will take me a while) to find where you have hidden yourpreschooler's raincoat in preparation for next week's school and activity adventures. Because, remember, real northwesterners DON'T carry an umbrella. Well, once you locate the raincoat, Read more...

History Lesson: Washington State Capitol.
August 18, 2008
It's never too early to start talking to your preschooler about government, and a great place to start is local government. Children respond to visual cues; a visit to the State Capital Building could jump start your little legislator. Olympia was named the capital of the Washington Territory in 1854, before the State of Washington was carved out and admitted to the union as the Read more...

Making the most of the dog days of summer.
August 06, 2008
Were you aware of the true definition of the term "dog days of summer"? I figured that it related to the long, hot days in late summer; and as it turns out, I was mostly right. The Farmer's Almanac indicates that the "dog days of summer" are the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11. Looks like you've got some time to get some fun in! Make homemade ice cream . It's a treat with a Read more...

August 05, 2008

While the list is actually quite long, I'vewhittled down to the top 5 beaches. Richmond Beach , Read more...
Gearing up for another summer weekend.
August 01, 2008
No worries, friends, Thursday's rain was just a minor blip on our screen as we look forward to the weekend. (Okay, okay, there's a small chance of rain on Friday, but I'll believe it when I see it.) I even took my own advice and let the kids splash away in the afternoon rain puddles. Got plans for the weekend? Here are some events to help fill your calendar. Judkins Park in Seattle will be Read more...
Trade your preschooler's kazoo for a summer concert.
July 22, 2008
My husband recently returned from a business trip that caused him to be away from the house for an entire week He brought them kazoos . KAZOOS. As much as I like to support my children's interest in music; I've had to set some rules regarding the use of the kazoos. The two main rules are nokazooing while someone in the house is sleeping (mostly for my benefit) and no kazooing in the car Read more...
How to make friends and influence people (not really) in Seattle.
July 21, 2008
Meeting new mommy-friends is always hard; at least for me. I'm not sure if it's my fear of being judged as a mom or my general discomfort with meeting new people, or both? I'm clueless. What I DO know is that I would to do more of it. The idea for this post came to me while I was reading a fantastic post by another Washington mom and blogger Amanda, at her site, Mandajuice . She moved to Read more...

"History Lesson: Gas Works Park."
July 04, 2008
Since many Seattlites will be converging upon the city's iconic Gas Works Park, I thought it might be a great time to look back and piece together just how this post-modern creation came to be. Because, honestly? I had NO idea until I did my research, but it is as cool as a story as I thought it would be. Beginning in 1900, the Seattle Light Company began to purchase lots on the north Read more...
Five ways to make the most of your three day 4th of July weekend.

In Seattle, it's practically tradition that it rains on the 4th of July. So, it's sort of unprecedented that it will be somewhat sunny for the holiday for two, count it TWO, years in a row. Since you won't be stuck in the house with the kids all weekend, here's the best of Seattle area activities to get you moving. Enjoy Seattle at the WaMu Family Fourth . You'll find family activities Read more...
Layover Lifesavers: A Preschooler's Guide to the SeaTac Airport.
July 02, 2008
With the kids out of school for summer, it's the perfect time for travel. However, just like the high price of gas has upped the cost of most everything we purchase, it has also affected the airline industry. Ticket prices are higher; and you can expect your flights to be fuller and your in-flight time to be longer; all in the hope of saving some money for the airline. For travelers with Read more...
Five songs to keep you dancing all summer long.
July 01, 2008
The longest day of the year was just over a week ago, but these summer
days still contain plenty of daylight hours. And I'm always looking for
fun ways to fill them. So, how about putting some of these songs on and
dancing the day away? Because, sometimes, my son has got to ROCK.

Keeping sane on HOT Seattle days.
June 30, 2008
I know we have (well, at least I have) all been complaining that summer was slow to arrive; but honestly, this past weekend was a bit too warm for me. Once the thermometer hits 88 degrees or so, it goes past warm and enjoyable, and moves straight to hot and sticky. So, what to do when summer hits us hard? Stay home, but play it cool. Work together to make homemade popsicles or fudgesicles Read more...
Events preview for this weekend: it's going to be hot, hot, HOT.
June 26, 2008
Even though the first of July is next Tuesday (!!), only in just this past week has it really felt like summer in Seattle. The beautiful summer weather should come to a crescendo this Saturday, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-to-high eighties. So if you're not headed out camping (like my husband and son are) or out to the beach; it would be a great time to slather on some Read more...
Getting to know Seattle: 5 great ways to introduce a preschooler to local historic sites.
June 24, 2008
Historic sites and children don't always mix. In my head I'm seeing the combination of my energetic three and five year olds and the antiques of the Dearborn House is something I just can't condone. While there is great beauty and history in our city's many historic sites, they are not often designed to contain the energy of our preschoolers. But there is hope - and lots of historic sites Read more...
History Lesson: The story of the Creation of the Interurban Line.
June 23, 2008
Kids love trains. Some REALLY do (like my son, shown below intently watching a toy train with a REAL train behind him at last summer's Thomas the Train visit at the Northwest Railway Museum ). (Don't mind the scraps on my poor son's face; he had a fight with some cement stairs and lost.) Some of us adults like trains, too. As I eagerly await the opening of Sound Transit's first set of light Read more...

Campstaycation (or now I'm just making words up).
June 18, 2008
I can't say for sure if I've ever been camping. Perhaps a night or two in a tent somewhere, but no actual rent a spot at a national park camping. My husband, however, has many fond memories of camping with friends and family and I'm sure that I will soon be able to say with certainty that I have, in fact, been camping. Children have a way of pushing us out of our comfort zone if we think Read more...
Read your way through summer.
June 13, 2008
Have you heard about the phenomenon known as "summer learning loss"? Research compiled at the John Hopkins University's Center for Summer Learning (yes, there is such a place) has shown a clear correlation between a summer school break and a measurable loss of acquired skills and knowledge. Well, that's not great. As I've shared , reading is fundamental to lifelong learning. It's also Read more...
Things you must do with your children in Seattle before they grow up, Vol. 2.
June 12, 2008
I started this list a few weeks ago - a list of the 100 must-do activities for you and your children to do before they grow up and are "too cool" to hang out with mom and dad. We covered the Fremont Troll, a visit to Pike Place Market, sledding at Snoqualmie , eating a Top Pot donut right off the conveyor belt, and riding the Tacoma Link light rail. Read more...
Seattle weekend guide: consider this your sanity.
June 06, 2008
It is really disheartening to come home after work, turn the key in the lock, open the door and hear the heater running in June. But, yet, that is what greeted me this evening. Again. In June. And this weekend? Not looking promising . By the way, just WHAT IS the difference between "rain" and "showers" anyway I have lists and lists of ideas and plans for great summer, outdoor activities Read more...
Rainy day reminder.
June 04, 2008
Can you BELIEVE the rain on Tuesday? It is JUNE, people. I actually had to root around my kids' closets to find appropriate shoes to wear. And raincoats! I had to find those, too! The rain will be hanging around for the next few days, if the professionals can be trusted. As a reminder, here's the post I wrote last month about some terrific rainy days ideas for you and your kids. Read more...
Things you must do with your children in Seattle before they grow up.

Room to run. And run. And RUN.
May 28, 2008
My son loves to run. Run, run, RUN. Me? I only run when being chased. When he's bored of simply running around in our backyard, I look for places that he can run and explore. Living in an urban area, like Seattle, where property values are high; large, urban parks can be tough to come by. Here are a few of the parks that have vast, wide open spaces for your preschooler to exhaust Read more...
