Yes, it is possible to star gaze in Seattle

July 20, 2009

Living in a city with as much light (and as many clouds) as Seattle, star gazing may not be on your radar as something to do with the kids. But it is possible to have a fun, educational outing staring up into the nighttime heavens here in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.

Turns out the University of Washington boasts the Theodor Jacobsen Observatory, (and a planetarium) where public viewing is available for the rest of the summer and into early fall.

The Eastside Astronomical Society hosts a family-friendly event one night every other month during which telescopes are set up and shared with anyone interested in taking a look.

The Pacific Science Center has some great information about urban star gazing on their website, including ideas on how to escape the city's light pollution in order to see more of what's Up.

If you can't keep your little one up late enough to view the stars this summer, check out NASA's cute Space Place website, with space-related activities for kids.
